Giving power of Attorney to a Lawyer

When you agree to buy a property in Egypt, it is advisable to give your lawyer power of attorney to complete the sale for you before you return to the UK. The right of power of attorney should be given to buy the property only on your behalf and you can name the property if you so wish.

To give power of attorney to your lawyer you have to visit the nearest government offices in each region, for example if you are purchasing property in Sharm El Sheikh this is in a city called El Tor which is a 60minute drive from Sharm El Sheikh, in Hurghada the offices are much closer to the city. This is a straight forward procedure but it is advisable to go with a trusted Arabic speaker just in case there are complications, this person should be either your lawyer or the property agent.

The form you sign is in Arabic and it should be translated to you by your Arabic speaker, it is then signed by that person and two witnesses at the offices. The documents are then recorded in the government ledgers and a copy of the document must be produced by your lawyer when he attends court to finalise the sale of your property.
You can obtain power of attorney for your lawyer in the UK but it is a costly, lengthy process and means visiting the Egyptian Embassy in London.

Finalising your sale at the court is something that can be done after the purchase has taken place, you could choose to collect the keys to your property and then give your lawyer power of attorney to complete the registration or notary as it is called in Egypt.
